The philosophers who debate this disagree on fairly little. Almost all of them want vastly more resources to be devoted to combatting existential risks, or things that might wipe us out in the next few centuries. If this is the critical moment, the balance of our efforts should probably be spent less on long-term priorities questions and more on action — like political efforts to reverse course on dangerous human activities, and research on how to mitigate the immediate dangers of present threats.
Some people who study the far future think that we mostly need targeted interventions to benefit the far future. A targeted intervention is something like stopping an asteroid from hitting Earth. Others favor mostly very broad ways of helping the far future, like making the population more altruistic or educated or compassionate, trusting that whatever problems arise for them, these things are likely to help. The question of whether this century is unique — or at least highly unusual — might affect whether targeted or broad interventions seem better.
In short, how we think about the threats of this century might significantly affect how we go about addressing the threats of this century. Sign up for the Future Perfect newsletter. Our mission has never been more vital than it is in this moment: to empower through understanding.

It wasn't until the second century, aka the 2nd century, that the years had a digit in the hundreds column: the year was a century and a half into the new era, putting it smack-dab in the middle of the 2nd century.
AD also styled A. AD is contrasted with BC also styled B. It depends on who you ask. Some people think the 22nd century will start January 1, and end December 31, , with the 23rd century beginning on January 1, But there is a long history of people insisting that this is flat-out wrong for mathematical reasons: a century is by definition years in length, and the first century started on January 1, 1, which means that when December 31, 99 rolled around only 99 years had passed; therefore, the first century of the current millennium didn't actually end until December 31, , and the second century didn't begin until January 1, This topic has proven to be vexatious especially at the turns of centuries, starting at the end of the 17th one, according to a Library of Congress article by Ruth S.
