ROB45 posted I think it's this, combined with the fact that both companies stand for different values, and people side with the one they think fit their values better.
Basically both have their target audience, and it's just different. While Sony and the third parties developing for them are aiming more toward the Western audiences recently, and the teen audience range with their dark, "mature" and gory games that try everything to not look too cute, Nintendo aims more for the older people who remember and still love arcade-like experiences, perfected to gameplay who don't care if games look cute, or even prefer lighthearted arcade fun to the darker more grimy worlds of its competitors.
Both sides want their games like they are and would also like to see the other company to produce more games like that. It basically boils down to taste, some like pizza, others like burgers. When in fact he has no clue what he's talking about and gets mad when people tell him that.
