Posts: 8, I have measured the same amp using cathode resistor voltage drop subtracting 5. Aug 12, 4. Posts: 40, The ear is the best tool, imho. Then, one would want to know through measurements and calculations where the ear has caused the operator to set the bias OF course, some experience might be advisable when using this aural method.
I have set bias on amps for players with their ears making the decisions Aug 12, 5. Robrob - that's possible of course, but is that universally true in every single amp? Because I have not found that to be so. Either way this is all - myself included - somewhat anecdotal information. My findings are - that ultimately I get different readings with each type in different amps. Some may match up, but more often they don't. THAT'S my reality. And with the sheer amount of money that exchanges hands yearly for techs to replace and bias tubes - man I'd want to be able to explain my logic if my feet were held to the fire.
Which they NEVER are in a tech world - they just cover over the issue with more technical speak when in actuality there isn't a problem. But I'm off topic. Over thinking this? But Tung Sol isn't answering the phone to take my orders anymore. Aug 12, 6. Posts: 4, Aug 12, 7. LeicaBoss likes this. Aug 12, 8. Age: 45 Posts: 4, You are way overthinking. And you seem to have some angst down in there as well. However one measures bias, all it is is a reference.
A place to start. Every amp and tube is different. Why would you expect there to be 1 perfect end-all-be-all method? JD0x0 likes this. Aug 12, 9. So perhaps this 5. Could someone explain this to me please? Because this is news to me. Stack Overflow for Teams — Collaborate and share knowledge with a private group. Create a free Team What is Teams? Learn more. Metal film cathode resistors? Thread starter hamfist Start date Dec 24, Messages 1, Metal film plate resistors are well known for reducing hiss in the early gain stages of high gain amps.
However, what about using metal films as cathode resistors in the same gain stages. Would that also have noise benefits? Your opinions please gentlemen Negative K3 fan Member. Messages 6. Maybe a little, because there is some current going through, if you want minimum noise, replace all the resistors for metal film, and make a really clean lay out, use shielded wire where needed and shield the chassis as much as possible.
